Description

This is an animated flight map showing flights from Madison, Wisconsin to surrounding cities in the Midwest.

Purpose

The purpose of this map is to show how 3D can be used in a consumer oriented geographic application. This map was created in parallel with a 2D version and when users were asked which map they liked best, the 3D map was strongly preferred. The 3D graphics make the map come alive and become a microcosm of the real 3D world that it depicts.

Features

• Flash integration
  This map uses Flash for the time control on the user interface and Hypercosm for the 3D view of the content. The two controls talk to each other using Javascript on the web page. This arrangement works very well and allows each component to be implemented and maintained seperately.
  
  
• View oriented compass rose
  The compass rose orientes with respect to the scene but remains in a stationary location on the display to make the map orientation easy to understand.
