Mapping
MappingThe mapping feature makes it possible to place your 3ds Max models on top of a 2D map or aerial image underlay. A map or aerial image underlay is an easy and effective way to give your web based architectural models a sense of place and a sense of scale.

The Mapping Toolbar
To use the mapping toolbar, simply export your model to a web page using one of the skins that supports mapping such as the Standard with Large Buttons and Maps Skin. To export models using a custom skin, follow the instructions listed here. Additional custom skins are available for download. Once you've exported your model with a standard mapping skin, the mapping toolbar will be displayed on the upper right. Use the menu to select a map and the button to display or hide the mapping underlay.

Choosing Different Map Types
You can select between different map types including the standard "Road Maps", "Aerial" or "Satellite" maps, and "Hybrid" maps that combine the road and satellite images. Below is an example of the different mapping types:

A Note on Mapping Terms of Use
By modifying the skin or the exported HTML / Javascript, it's possible to select between different mapping providers. The various mapping data providers all have different "Terms of Use" that you must abide by, particularly if you intend to use your model in a commercial application.

  • Yahoo Maps - If you use Yahoo Maps (which the skins are set up to use by default), then you don't need to worry because Yahoo has graciously made their map data available to this application completely free of charge and free of most restrictions. For applications that involve real-time route guideance, vehicle tracking, and other specialized applications, see Yahoo Maps's Terms of Use.
  • Google Maps - If you use Google Maps, then you need to apply for and include a Google Maps API key on your exported web page.
  • Microsoft Bing Maps - If you use Microsoft Bing Maps, then you'll want to check with their Terms of Use.
